Sedation for Periodontal Procedures

Sedation

We offer several types of sedation to help relieve anxiety related to dental treatment. The type of sedation utilized depends on your needs and sometimes the procedures being performed. The three types of sedation offered by our office are:

Nitrous Oxide

Often referred to as “laughing gas,” this form of sedation is used to induce a state of relaxation. It is quick acting and takes only minutes for the effects to wear off. It is most often used for minor procedures and on patients with mild anxiety.

Oral Sedation

This form of sedation uses a medication taken by mouth to induce a state of relaxation. The medication is often taken at our office 30 minutes to one hour prior to the dental appointment. It is most often used for more involved procedures and on patients with moderate levels of anxiety.

IV Conscious Sedation

This form of sedation uses medication delivered to the patient by an IV. The level of relaxation is easily controlled with this method. It is most often used for more involved or longer procedures and on patients with moderate to severe dental anxiety. Patients are awake but very relaxed or sleepy.

Oral sedation and IV conscious sedation usually provide a level of amnesia associated with the procedure performed at the time the sedation is administered. A responsible adult must accompany patients having either of these forms of sedation to provide safe transport home after the procedure.

Our doctors will make you comfortable so you can receive the care you need.
