Ridge Preservation

Bone Loss due to missing teeth

Careful management of extraction sockets after tooth extraction prevents unsightly bone loss and provides a better cosmetic outcome for tooth replacement. The jawbone receives stimulation from the teeth. When a tooth is extracted, the stimulation is lost. As the jawbone heals, and during the first year after the extraction, 25-40% of the bone in the area is lost. Continued bone loss can continue to occur overtime. Ridge collapse can be significant in the upper jaw, especially around the front teeth because the bone is less dense in the upper jaw. This often creates cosmetic issues for a patient, even if the tooth is replaced with a bridge.
