There are a number of ways in which the appearance of the teeth and gum tissues can be improved using periodontal procedures. Some of these procedures include:
This procedure can improve the cosmetics in areas where the root of the tooth has become exposed due to recession. Refer to the Gum Grafting section for more details.
Some people have teeth that appear short or they may have a “gummy smile”. Cosmetic crown lengthening can be utilized either as a stand alone treatment or in combination with restorative dentistry (usually crowns or veneers) to correct the appearance and improve your smile.
Although your teeth appear short, they may actually be the proper length. The teeth may be covered with too much gum tissue or the bone level may be too close to the crown of the tooth. Dr. Flynn can correct this to allow for the proper amount of tooth to show and reduce the amount of gum tissue displayed when you smile.
During this procedure, excess gum and bone tissue is reshaped to expose more of the natural tooth. This is usually done to more than one tooth, to even your gum line, and to create a beautiful smile.
The jawbone receives stimulation from the teeth. When a tooth is extracted, the stimulation is lost. As the jawbone heals, and during the first year after the extraction, 25-40% of the bone in the area is lost. Continued bone loss can continue to occur overtime. Ridge collapse can be significant in the upper jaw, especially around the front teeth because the bone is less dense in the upper jaw. This often creates cosmetic issues for a patient, even if the tooth is replaced with a bridge.
Bone grafting following extraction of a tooth can preserve the bony form, minimizing gum tissue and bone collapse. This allows for a more esthetic tooth replacement with either a dental implant and a crown or a fixed bridge on the adjacent teeth.
For sites where the teeth have been missing, soft tissue grafts may cosmetically resolve the defect left behind or a combination of bone and soft tissue grafting may be needed if the defect is severe.
